Getting to Know the BCoD Committee: Katherine Vargas

By Katherine Vargas, Prior Authorization Specialist - Las Vegas Dermatology

Q: What is an interesting fact about you that we would not find on your resume?
A: I make a mean homemade green chicken enchilada with plant-based cheese. It’s a favorite in my house and always a hit.

Q: What was your first job?
A: My first job was as a cashier at Pic N Save, where I learned the basics of customer service and hustle.

Q: What does a typical weekend look like for you?
A: My weekends are delightfully predictable: Saturday mornings start with a visit to my boyfriend’s parents, then a Trader Joe’s run, some pool time, and dinner and a movie. Sundays are for church, brunch, more pool time, and prepping for the week ahead. Like clockwork every weekend—and I love it.

Q: What motivates you?
A: Love. Both the love I have for people and the desire to do meaningful work that supports others.

Q: What is your favorite place you’ve ever travelled to?
A: Jerusalem, Israel. The depth of history, culture, and spirituality made it a truly unforgettable experience.

Q: What is the first thing you’d buy if you won the lottery?
A: I don’t gamble, so I probably wouldn’t be in that situation. But if I ever came into that kind of money, I’d focus on long-term security and helping others rather than big purchases… oh yeah, and a Dyson Airwrap co-anda 2x 🙂

Q: If you could be a pro at any Olympic sport, which one would you choose?
A: Snowboarding. It’s such a bold, freeing sport, and I admire the skill and balance it requires. Plus, it’s the one sport that landed me in the hospital and I still went back to the mountain. Granted, that was in my 20s, but I’m still up for the challenge.

Q: How long have you been a BC?
A: I’ve been in and out of the BC role for just over a year, but I bring nearly four years of pharmacy tech experience, including time at a specialty pharmacy.

Q: How did you become a BC?
A: I was initially brought into Biologics as a backup for our department head, Lu, when coverage was needed. Although I manage all other PAs and support pharmacy fills, the team knows they can count on me to jump in whenever needed.

Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The people. I truly enjoy serving patients and supporting my team.

Q: What excites you about your involvement in BCoD?
A: I’m excited about learning, growing, sharing insights, and helping implement changes that lead to better patient outcomes.
